The Christ the King Chess Club was started several years ago by parent and International Grand Master, Rich Costigan. When Rich’s youngest son graduated in 2006, Marty King took on the club organizer role.
The club gives interested students the opportunity to practice their chess skills and enjoy some additional non-class time together. Students play games against one another and scores are kept to determine advancement on four different ladders. Trophies are awarded annually for Top of Ladder and Most Games. Most Improved students are also recognized. All equipment is provided. Students of all skill levels are welcome - including beginners. Learn to play lessons are provided at the weekly meetings.
In early March the club sends a team to the New Jersey State Elementary Chess Tournament. It is usually held at Brookdale Community College in Monmouth County. The day is long but the students have fun competing and representing Christ the King.
The club meetings begin in October and end the week before track practice starts in late March. Meetings take place in the school cafeteria from 7 to 8 PM on any Wednesday when school is in session. Parents are encouraged to assist Mr. King in chaperoning the weekly meeting.
The 2006-2007 meetings included 31 students. Results were as follows:
